Chipko Movement

26th of March may have been just another ordinary day for most of us.
But did you know that it marked the 45th anniversary of the Chipko movement?

What is the Chipko movement?
It all started in Uttar Pradesh in 1973. A small group of women got together led by environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna. They had one goal - they were going to save trees.

The name 'Chipko' comes from Hindi which means 'to stick to'. And that's exactly how they planned on preventing these trees from being chopped down. These women surrounded the trees and clung to them by linking their hands together.

The movement picked up momentum over the years. Across the globe, people have expressed their solidarity with the movement by clinging to trees they want to save.

World over, air pollution is lowering the quality of life for millions. Industrial air pollution is accelerating the global climate change phenomenon. It is impacting wildlife, forests, and water sources. Movements like Chipko and individual participation to save trees has become vital.

It's hard to overstate the importance of trees.

Trees purify the air.
They absorb odours and pollutant gases like nitrogen oxides, ammonia, and sulphur dioxide.

Trees provide oxygen.
Did you know that it takes an acre of mature trees to provide enough oxygen for 18 people?

Trees help fight against climate change.
Excess carbon dioxide building up in our atmosphere contributes to climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide. Removing and storing the carbon while releasing the oxygen back into the air.

Cottonworld Adopt A Tree

Planting a new tree is one of the most powerful ways in which you can have a positive effect on the environment. It is also one of the easiest and most sustainable ways to make a difference.

Cottonworld's Adopt A Tree campaign aims to promote environmental sustainability.
With this initiative, we invited communities to support green homes and neighbourhoods.

We often doubt the power of one person to leave a meaningful footprint on the world. Cottonworld wishes to inspire the people to come together to plant and care for trees. To support this green movement.

Since the start of the campaign, we've given away thousands of seeds. We hope thousands of trees are being planted and cared for by people.

If you are one of those people then do send us updates and photos of how your trees are doing! We need trees now more than ever! If you want to be a part of the solution. Join us in making India green, one tree at a time.

Leaving you with the words of George Orwell... “The planting of a tree is a gift which you can make to posterity at almost no cost and with almost no trouble, and if the tree takes root it will far outlive the visible effect of any of your other actions, good or evil.”
